Puducherry (Pondicherry) and Tiruvannamalai make a perfect pair: French-colonial streets and the sea on one side, the sacred hill of Arunachala on the other. Many travellers combine the two, and the drive is short and scenic. This guide explains the Pondicherry to Tiruvannamalai route by road, bus and train, with distances, travel times, costs and the best stops along the way.
Pondicherry to Tiruvannamalai: Quick Facts

Route 1: Via Villupuram (Most Common)
From Pondicherry, head west to Villupuram (about 40 km), then continue on the Villupuram to Tiruvannamalai road via Tirukoilur. This is the route most buses take. Tirukoilur has the ancient Ulagalantha Perumal Temple and the Gnanananda Tapovanam ashram, both worthwhile short stops for pilgrims.
Route 2: Via Tindivanam and Gingee (Scenic)
Take the East Coast Road north or the inland road to Tindivanam, then turn west to Gingee and on to Tiruvannamalai. The distance is similar, and you pass the dramatic Gingee Fort, which makes an excellent stop if you leave early. Allow 3 to 4 extra hours to climb the fort.
By Bus
- Direct buses: Tamil Nadu (TNSTC) and Puducherry (PRTC) buses run from the Puducherry new bus stand to Tiruvannamalai through the day, with extra services on Pournami.
- Via Villupuram: if no direct bus is available, take any of the very frequent buses to Villupuram, then switch to a Tiruvannamalai bus, which run every few minutes.
- Pournami tip: buses fill quickly on full moon days. Travel in the morning to secure a seat. Check the dates in our Girivalam dates 2026 calendar.
By Train
There is no direct regular train between Puducherry and Tiruvannamalai on most days. Take a train from Puducherry to Villupuram Junction (about 40 minutes), then a train on the Villupuram to Katpadi line, which stops at Tiruvannamalai. Check the latest timings on the Indian Railways or NTES app, as schedules change. Special trains often run for Pournami and Karthigai Deepam.
By Taxi or Self-Drive
A taxi is the most comfortable option for families, and it lets you stop at Gingee or Tirukoilur. Roads are good two-lane and four-lane highways. Fuel up in Villupuram or Tindivanam, and avoid driving into Tiruvannamalai town on Deepam days, when vehicles are diverted to parking areas on the outskirts.
